Résumé : Three speleological projects to Tanzania were carried out by international teams in the years 1994, 1995 and 2000. The main areas investigated were the Matumbi Hills (Kilwa district) and the Tanga area.
The investigations revealed 14,731 km of mapped cave passages in the Matumbi Hills including the 7.510 m long Nandembo Cave System that currently takes rank fifteen of the longest caves of Africa. Overall, 20 caves were surveyed in the Matumbi Hills. 6,809 km in 12 caves were mapped in the Tanga region where Mwinyigogo Cave is the second longest known cave of Tanzania (2.640 m).
Water samples from the Matumbi caves have been analysed and biospeleological observations were made.
Furthermore some speleological investigations have been made on the island of Zanzibar, where the 300 m long Mangapwani Cave was mapped and several other waterfilled cave entrances were located.[n° ou bulletin]Exemplaires

RwandaRésumé : During a Rwandean-Swiss-German speleological project in 2003 nearly 10 km of cave passages were surveyed in 42 caves of the Ruhengeri province, NW Rwanda. The caves are exclusively developed in Cenozoic volcanic rocks.
The most significant findings were lava tube caves like Ubuvumo Nyabikuri-Ruri (Bukamba district) at 3,384 m (unsegmented), which is currently the longest cave of Rwanda as well as Gacinyiro 2 (Kinigi district, unsegmented, 1,470 m). Ubuvumo bwa Musanze, formerly reported to be the longest cave of Rwanda at 4,560 m was found to be segmented with the longest segment being just 1,600 m long. Some of the caves still contain human remains from the 1994 ethnic genocide.
The above-mentioned results initiated the publication of this report that summarises the knowledge on the caves of Rwanda in general and of the 2003 campaign in particular.
Many caves in NW Rwanda still await exploration and the potential for further discoveries is as excellent as the co-operation with the local authorities proved to be.[n° ou bulletin]Exemplaires

IranRésumé : A speleological project in September/October 2003, supervised by the Geological Survey of Iran (GSI), and supported both by the GSI and the government of Zanjan province, firmly established Ghar Katalehkhor (also called: Ghar Kotalehkhor) as the longest cave of Iran at 12.860 m in length. The surveying team consisted of four participants: Mr. H. Akbarzadeh (GSI), Mr. Javad Ashjari (Geological Department of Shiraz University), Mr. M. Laumanns (Germany) and Mr. Reinhold Scherrer (Switzerland). The work within the Zanjan provincial government was co-ordinated by Dr. S. Arshadi (Iran/Germany).
Ghar Katalehkhor was discovered in 1965 by mountaineers from Hamadan. It is an anastomotic multilevel cave with a large main gallery, many coulisses, parallel passages, much breakdown and extensive calcite formation, as well as superb crystals that cover complete chambers for dozens of metres (e.g. the approximately 100 m long "Wedding Hall").
The cave is open to tourists and has a 1.250 m long visitor path that is partly made up of steel bridges. From the terminal point of the show cave the visitors have to walk back the whole distance to the entrance and thus negotiate an underground walk of 2.5 km.
Ghar Katalehkhor is developed in Oligocene/Miocene limestone in the northern flank of an anticline. It is suggested that the cave was mainly created by phreatic corrosion in a still water milieu. A speleogenetic model is presented in this report.[n° ou bulletin]Exemplaires

MadagascarRésumé : This report summarises three different speleological projects to Madagascar. Besides the successful 2003 Dutch expedition to the Tsingy de Bemaraha, two previous German projects to the Karst of South Narinda (NE of Majunga, 1991 und 1992) and Namoroka (SW of Majunga, 1992) are presented in detail.
During the 2003 Dutch expedition, fourteen caves with a total passage length of 7.228 m were discovered and surveyed in Bemahara National Park, including two major cave systems: Zohy Krisitaly (3.355 m long) and Zohy Malalaky (2.166 m long).
The 1991/92 German expeditions yielded 8.678 m of cave passage from 9 caves: 4.630 m long Anjohiambovonomby was explored in the Namoroka karst; 3.896 m resulted from the South Narinda karst, including the 2.104 m long Anjohikely; and in the central highlands of Madagascar 152 m long Grotte Albert was discovered on Mount Ibity.[n° ou bulletin]Exemplaires

LaosRésumé : Northern Laos is virtually unknown to speleology. Only a few reconnaissance projects and three caving expeditions were conducted prior to 2005 in the province of Luang Phrabang: a Dutch expedition (AMIS Laos expedition 2000, with a preparatory trip in 1999) and two German projects in 2002 and 2003/04.
The 2000 AMIS Laos project produced approximately 7,300 m of surveyed passage from 15 caves, including the 2,070 m long system Tham Khan-Pageo (Muang Ngoy, Nam Ou Valley, Ngoy district - now open to tourists), the 1,433 m long Tham Gnai (Nan District), and the 1,028 m long Tham Pha Kouang (Nong Khiaw, Ngoy district), as well as the deepest cave found to date in the region: the -105 m deep Tham Thia (Nan District).
The two German expeditions produced 5,564 m of mapped cave passages from 34 caves, the longest of which was Tham Loum (Xiang Ngeun District) with 1,598 m of passage. Finally a joint Dutch-German project was conducted in February 2005. In the area of Phou Khoun south of Luang Phrabang several caves were linked to form a 2.65 km long cave system (Tham Seua-Nam Lot). A new caving region was visited around Vieng Phouka in the Luang Nam Tha province close to the Thai and Burma borders. The first investigations resulted in significant findings such as Tham Pasat (Tham Nam Mai) at 1,490 m, Tham Nam Eng (Fossil Cave) at 3,120 m, and Tham Nam Eng (Resurgence Cave) at 3,460 m.
Overall, roughly 24.3 km of cave passage has been surveyed to date in northern Laos. This report contains an overview of all visited caving regions with detailed maps and cave descriptions. Additionally, one chapter is dedicated to biospeleological investigations.[n° ou bulletin]Exemplaires
